Some fun pictures of swimming with my boys! Obviously this was last week but the boys are so cute! Notice Brigham face down on the cement. This is his after swim tradition, get out of the pool, lay on the warm patio and take a nap. It doesn't look very comfy, but he can sleep that way for an hour or more and if I try to move him he gets really mad! When we see the Dr this week we'll beg for a water cast so these aren't the only swim pics of Jon this summer.

Sleep Deprivation!
When the Dr prescribed Tylenol with codeine my first thought was- great Jon will sleep and be easy to deal with. Then I had a little nagging thought- one of my kids gets wired on codeine which one is it? Well it's Jon. He and I have had approx 7 hours of sleep since Saturday in 1/2 hour to hour increments. We sat up last night reading everyones blogs, Jon especially appreciates pictures, we walked the neighborhood, talked, and watched Eragon at 3 a.m. Not being one who manages well on little sleep it has made the days awful long. At the same time Jon and I have had a good time hanging out while the rest of the family dreams! We changed his painkiller and with any luck we'll sleep like logs tonight!
ER post follow up
1st - Yes we were at UVRMC I called Orem Community to see if they could get us in faster but they said if we needed an Ortho Dr they would have to send us to UVRMC anyway same with instacare. I understand Timp is really fast and nice but because they don't take our insurance it would cost twice as much
2nd- Speaking of cost they are pretty fast about swiping your credit card for that 150$ copay I have to admit the little handheld was pretty cool. The girl came in asked for my insurance card held it up and took a picture of it with her little hand held then swiped my credit card across the top then had me sign all the forms right there on the screen while I sat by Jons bed.
3rd- The ER nurses were so so great! The guy was great with Jon he took time with Ben and I and our other nurse, a girl, was also really good she did great. They totally deserve huge raises (not the triage girl!)
4th- Some Jon sayings. "I never want to get on a tramp again!" "Mom this hurts way more than a sliver" As he was coming out of the conscious sedation the nurse asks "do you know where you are?" Jon: "here." Nurse: " where is here?" Jon "Right Here" Nurse: "are you at home?" Jon: "NO RIGHT HERE" Nurse "where?" Jon: "here in the hospital" his voice had that - Duh don't you know - sound. He was such a brave trooper!
5th- I just started his 3rd movie since midnight (its 8 am) - We didn't get much sleep he was in alot of pain. But with help from our in house orthopedic certified nurse he's doing much better this morning
5 Hours in the ER
Our peaceful morning was interrupted by a pound on the door accompanied by screams when our neighbor carried Jon with a obviously broken arm home from his backyard. The story is that another neighbor boy kicked Jonathan off the trampoline Brother Brocco heard the screams and ran over to help. Well being one who hates ERs I called the on-call Dr for our pediatrician. Ben called Becky and loaded in the van with Jon while I left the other kids with Ted and Julene to wait for Becky and carefully drove to the office. Well the DR. took one look at the deformed arm (refer to Logan's broken arm pictures for an idea of how it looked) and told us we needed an ER and an Orthopedic Doctor. So we walked down to the ER entrance and checked in. Jonathan was not feeling to great and though he tried to be brave was letting out cries of pain. The triage nurse checked him out then sent us to the waiting room. Not being one who liked to see my boy in so much pain I was not happy!!! The nurse told us we would have to wait for X-ray to call and tell us they were ready. This is when it's handy to have a nurse for a husband! Ben picked up the courtesy phone and called x-ray they said they could take us right then so we headed over there for pictures. The techs were so great! They were nice and gentle. (should get a raise!) Then it was back to the ER waiting room for more waiting. You know the rule about mother bears and their cubs? Well apparently the triage nurses don't, I think they should teach it in nursing school!!!!! Poor Jon was crying, shaking and hurting, Ben was getting quite sore (you try holding a 50 lb kid for an hour). And I was getting mad. So I went to the guy at the desk and asked how much longer it would be. His answer (remember bear and cub) "you've only been waiting an hour" Well, nurses take note, that did not go over very well and I lit into him. I sat down and watched them take back a girl who didn't look hurt at all! My blood boiling and poor Ben cringing I went to the nurse in the triage room to find out what could be done for Jon's pain and when we could get a room. She informed me they were very busy and he was not critical enough and the Dr would need to give him something for the pain. So I asked if they could at least page the Ortho Dr. so when we did get a room we wouldn't have to wait longer and her answer (BEAR_CUB) "well we don't even know if it is broken" I could tell she wished she could take it back, but too late! I was over the top! I screamed as loud as my very horse voice (I've been sick) would let me. DON'T KNOW IF IT'S BROKEN! HAVE YOU LOOKED AT THE KID! That was it I was so mad! In what world is it acceptable to let a 6 year old with a displaced broken arm wait in pain that long. Well to make a very long story just long. I ranted and raved mixed with Jons cries of pain until I had the whole waiting room ready to revolt and Ben ready to bury his head in the sand. And eventually the took us back. BTW something I didn't realize until I got home we passed 2 empty beds that didn't fill the whole time we were there! Well the Dr looked and (NO WAY) we needed an Ortho and he would have to be paged. Well he was busy and didn't want to come so first the ER Doc tried to set the arm they put Jon under and the Doc pulled and twisted and x-rayed,it was awful to watch. Then decided he couldn't do it and called the ortho again. This time he decided to grace us with his presence. So they put Jon out again and in two seconds he had the thing perfectly lined up. After splinting it and waiting for Jon to wake up they sent us home and it only took over 5 hours!!!! If I could I would break the arms of that nurse and a few IHC big wigs then make them wait just as long as we had to to be treated maybe then they will take some pity on the next poor kid!!! (mother bear-cub)
Learning
This has been a week of learning new skills! First Jon had an oil painting class with Grandma Julene. I was amazed when he ran in the house and said "look at what I painted!" Julene said that Jon picked the picture she sketched it for him and he added the paint. WOW! We bought a frame for it and when it finishes drying he wants to hang it in his room.
Brigham tackled his 2 wheeler. Ben took the training wheels off and Brig set off so fast Ben Couldn't keep up to hold the back of the seat and before he knew it Brigham was cruising around the cul-de-sac like a crazy out of control two wheeled maniac.
Meanwhile Sam has mastered the tripod sit. He's getting into such a cute expressive stage! Wanting to join every conversation he hears and play with all the big kids!
Goodbye Bone Puppy
It's time to say goodbye to our dear friend Bone Puppy. Brigham and his puppy have been attached at the thumb since he was a little baby. They sleep together, play together, eat together and puppy definitely shows it. Brigham will only suck his thumb if he is holding his puppy and I was getting tired of him walking around puppy in hand and thumb in mouth so we made a rule that puppy couldn't leave bed. Unfortunately Brig wouldn't stick to that rule and yesterday the was the straw! One of Brig and puppy's favorite games is "fly off the ceiling fan". In this game Brigham throws puppy up onto the blades of the fan (while it's on) and waits for it to fling puppy off. I cant count the number of times he's gotten in trouble for this! So yesterday up puppy went on to the front room fan but he landed half on the fan half on the light under the fan. I saw Brig and Jon in the front room and sent them down to make their beds. Just as they stepped out of the room CRASH the light smashed onto the floor. Apparently Puppy's spinning unscrewed the light. Glass was everywhere and puppy got a one way ticket to my cedar chest.
My 4 Kids!
Here's a brief moment from the life of Heather!
I'm standing at the stove making pancakes while the kids are gathered around Sam in the highchair
Sam: WAAAAA (the hurt cry)
Mom: Hey, did you guys hurt Sam?
Brig: Yes
Jon: No
Emma: I don't know what do you think?
Srapbooking
What do you do when your parents go out of town? Throw a party at their house!! My friends and I are always looking for time to get together especially with out our combined 15 kids. So when I heard that Mom and Dad were headed to Washington for a week I figured it was the perfect opportunity to hold a scrapbook retreat in their house. Jen and Jordanna showed up Monday and we worked and gossiped late into the night or early morning as the case may be. Carrie joined us Tuesday morning for breakfast at Mimi's and more scrap booking. I admit I didn't get as much finished as I wanted but, Sam's book is nearly updated!
Green Beans
With each of my kids the introduction of green beans has met the same reaction, the yuck face trying to spit them out turning the head. So when I busted the jar out of the pantry for Sam tonight I was prepared for about the same thing. But instead he calmly took 3 or 4 bites then simply sat there and calmly stared at me while keeping his mouth shut, not tight, but closed. I laughed and laughed it was not what I was expecting and makes me curious what his personality will be as he grows!
WOW! what a day!!!
Saturday was the busiest day I've had for a while, but also a really fun one! It was the City Summerfest and since Ben was working the kids and I headed out together starting at 9:00am. First it was off to my quilt class not something I usually take 4 kids to but a mom's gotta do what a mom's gotta do. This was the last month of our block of the month here's a picture of the finished product!
After quilt class we dropped a blanket at the parade route on our way to the baby contest. Sam was of course the cutest baby there however because the winners were announced during his nap we have no idea whether or not the judges appreciated how adorable he is
!! After the contest we walked to the park for all the summerfest activities. The kids oohed and aahed at the classic cars and army jeeps. We wandered the booths then headed to the ambulance and firetrucks where the kids were able to climb through them get lessons about the gear from paramedics and firemen and even try on fire suits they loved it! After that it was more booths and a kids craft area where they each made something.
The kids wanted to go on the carnival rides but with Sam strapped to my front and feeling a little tired of playing mother hen herding her chicks I offered a trade- lunch at Max & Cheese the new kids restaurant instead of carnival rides. It took a little begging but the kids finally agreed and we headed off to lunch. The restaurant is so cute the kids loved it! Each table has a game board in the top of it, the menu is both kid and adult friendly and the staff is really nice and understanding! We ate and played shoots and ladders. I would recommend it for anyone taking kids out to lunch!
After naps and a quick swim it was back to the Summerfest! We sat and watched the Hale Center theater's performance of Little Women and some singing group sing songs from Hair-spray. Emma loved both and could have sat there all evening if it weren't for the restless boys. Then we walked to Smiths for dinner where my boys successfully tipped over their second grocery cart in 2 weeks luckly no one was in this it this time. Then met up with Jared and Kat and their kids, Jordanna and her kids and eventually Ben for parade and fireworks. By the time we got home late that night needless to say we were all pretty worn out but it was a great day!
